Mitten Making!

Tomorrow I’ll be joining a couple friends for a mitten-making workshop at the U of M.

I have no idea what I’m in store for, but I’m excited by the prospect of making something creative with my own two hands.

I have to rustle up some supplies before tomorrow, and I’m already daunted by the prospect of having to “felt” a sweater for use as fabric. Apparently it involves washing and drying a sweater on the hot setting, but never having done it I’m worried I’ll do something wrong and end up setting my dryer on fire.

I think this week has the potential for some good fun – I’ll keep you posted

How did the mittens turn out? I’ve knit them but I’ve never made them from an old sweater.

Hi Krista! Mitten making was a lot of fun (and I do still plan on making a follow up post about it, I know I’m quite behind).

Most everyone there was using real or synthetic fur to make their mittens with. I was using an old sweater.
There were a few different traditional patterns to choose from, and our instructors were there to help us size them up or down according to how big we needed them.

Due to my lack of sewing skills it was slow-going for me, but I had a lot of fun! (and I do have completed felt mittens in a dashing shade of red) I would love to knit a pair of mittens but it just seems too daunting!

I’ll post my results soon, I promise!

      Thanks for your question!
